Our reading group meets throughout the academic year to discuss texts at the intersection of mathematics and its cultural and philosophical embeddings. We read canonical texts in mathematics alongside contemporary works in the humanities that draw connections between these two domains by exploring their shared (and non-shared) modes of thinking through abstraction and modes of producing meaning. Alongside questions of meaning-making, we are interested in texts that examine the artificial sites where, when, and how mathematics is made to ‘happen’ (e.g. computation, software, machine learning, etc.). No advanced prior knowledge of mathematics is required to participate. A basic familiarity with mathematical notation is a plus, but not a prerequisite.
